Wayne has contributed an entry on critical gerontology to the Encyclopedia of Gerontology and Population Aging.

Critical gerontology hybridizes a broad spectrum of theoretical perspectives in the humanities and social sciences and extends the scope of aging research beyond biomedical models of ageing and ageist social policies and practices. In the past half-century since its formation, critical gerontology has complemented biomedical gerontology, psychological gerontology, and other branches of gerontology. Critical gerontology is expected to continue to play a critical role in offering a fuller conceptualization of age and ageing in an increasingly diverse older adult population.
